Squirrel and Rodent Removal in Guelph

Squirrels are the early-morning noise. Mice are the after-dark noise. Both are gap problems, and both get solved by sealing the building rather than by killing what is already inside.

If the noise is fast, light and scratchy, and it starts within an hour of sunrise, you have squirrels. Grey squirrels are the usual one in Guelph and they are a canopy animal — they arrive by branch, so the entries are almost always high: a soffit corner, a gable vent with a rusted-out screen, a roof vent collar, the gap where a hydro or cable line enters, or a chewed hole through aluminum fascia. Red squirrels are smaller, louder and more destructive per animal, and they show up more often near the ravine and conifer edges. Chipmunks work at ground level instead, under steps, porches and interlock.

Squirrels chew, and that is the real cost

A raccoon forces an opening. A squirrel manufactures one and then keeps working on it, because their incisors never stop growing and gnawing is maintenance, not aggression. In an attic that means wire insulation stripped off live conductors, low-voltage and alarm wiring cut, plumbing vent lines and PEX chewed, and structural wood opened up around the entry. Nobody can tell you how often that ends in a fire, and this site is not going to make a number up, but electricians who work in older Guelph attics see the damage constantly. If you know you have squirrels, the wiring is the reason to move on it rather than the noise.

Two litters a year

Grey squirrels nest in late winter and again in midsummer, so there is a second baby season in roughly July and August that catches people out. The rule is the same as raccoons: if there are young in the nest, a one-way door alone strands them. The nest gets located, the young removed by hand and placed where the mother can collect them, and the building sealed after she has moved them.

How the exclusion is built

  • One-way door sized for a squirrel on the active entry — a raccoon door will not hold one
  • Every other chew point, vent and gap screened first, so the animal has one way out and no way back
  • Galvanised or stainless steel mesh, not aluminum screen and not expanding foam. Squirrels go through foam, plastic and soft metal in a day
  • Gable and roof vents re-screened from behind rather than covered from the front
  • Fascia and soffit damage repaired, not taped over
  • Overhanging limbs identified — a branch within about three metres of the roof is a bridge, and trimming it is often the cheapest part of the whole job

Mice and rats

Different animal, same logic. A mouse needs a gap about the width of a pencil and a rat needs about the width of a thumb, and older Guelph houses have dozens of both: the rim joist where the foundation meets the framing, the gap around the gas line, the hydro and water service entries, dryer vents with a broken flapper, garage door bottom seals, and the seam under a bay window. Baiting alone is a subscription, not a solution — you kill the population inside, the gap stays open, and the next one is in by fall. The work here is a full ground-level exclusion: every penetration found and sealed in steel wool packed behind mortar, sheet metal or hardware cloth, with the interior population dealt with as part of the job rather than as the whole of it.

Autumn is when this arrives. The first hard cold snap in October or November pushes rodents indoors across the whole city at once, and the houses that get hit are the ones with an open rim joist and a mature garden against the foundation.

What this is not

This is wildlife exclusion. It is not insect pest control — no ants, no wasps, no bed bugs, no cockroaches. If that is what you have, you want a different trade, and you will be told so rather than sold something that does not apply.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if it is squirrels and not mice?

Timing and height. Squirrels are loud, fast and overhead, and they start at first light and go again in the late afternoon. Mice are quieter, mostly after dark, and usually in a wall or above a kitchen ceiling rather than in the open attic. Squirrels also stop entirely at night; mice do not.

Can I just block the hole once they are out for the day?

That is how most of these become expensive. You cannot tell from the ground whether every animal is out, and in nesting season you will strand young. A one-way door does the same job without the gamble, because it only works in one direction and it stays on until the space is confirmed empty.

Will sealing the house stop mice coming back?

It is the only thing that does. Killing the ones inside without closing the gaps means you are managing a population forever. A full ground-level exclusion is a bigger job on day one and it is the reason the problem ends instead of cycling every autumn.
