Skunk Removal and Under-Deck Exclusion in Guelph
Skunks are a ground problem, not a roof problem. The removal is the easy half. The barrier under the deck is what stops it happening again every March.
This is the signature call from Guelph's newer south and east subdivisions. Westminster Woods, Clairfields, Pine Ridge and Grange Hill East back onto stormwater ponds and naturalised buffer strips, the lots are graded so there is a void under every deck, and almost nobody skirts a deck down past frost line. That is a finished den site with a roof on it. Older parts of the city get the same problem under porches, front steps, garden sheds, sunrooms and the crawl space under an addition.
How you know
Usually the smell, and usually intermittently rather than constantly — a skunk that is simply living somewhere does not spray all day. The physical signs are better evidence: a hole eight to twelve centimetres across at the edge of the deck skirting or beside a step, with fresh soil fanned out below it, and a worn path leading away. Cone-shaped divots across the lawn overnight are skunks digging for grubs, which is a separate nuisance and sometimes the only sign you get. If a dog has been sprayed in the yard after dark twice in a week, there is a den on the property.
Why trapping alone does not end it
The den is the attraction, not the animal. Remove one skunk and leave an open dry cavity under a deck on a lot that backs onto a pond, and it is re-occupied — often within the same season, often by a skunk, sometimes by a groundhog or an opossum instead. Every serious version of this job ends with a barrier, and the barrier is most of what you are paying for.
The barrier, properly built
- Galvanised mesh fastened to the deck framing and run down to grade
- A trench along the perimeter, with the mesh continuing below grade and then turned outward into an L-footer so an animal that digs at the edge hits screen instead of soil
- Backfilled and graded so it is invisible once the grass comes back
- A single controlled opening left with a one-way door on it until the space is confirmed empty, then closed
Done that way it is permanent. Mesh stapled to the outside of the skirting and stopped at ground level is not — a skunk will go under it in one night, and so will everything else.
Babies under the deck
Skunk kits arrive in spring, and a mother will not leave them. Close the deck on a litter and you have a smell problem under your patio doors that lasts weeks and cannot be cleaned out without taking the deck apart. Same rule as everything else on this site: the space is confirmed empty before it is sealed, and in nesting season that means waiting for the young to be mobile or removing them and reuniting, not guessing.
If something has been sprayed
Tomato juice does nothing. The mix that actually works on a dog is hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a little dish soap, made up fresh and used immediately — do not bottle and store it. Keep it well away from the eyes, work it in, rinse thoroughly. For the eyes themselves, flush with water and call a vet. On siding, decking and concrete, a peroxide-based wash and time is the honest answer; the smell fades over days, not minutes.
Window wells and other traps
Skunks fall into window wells and cannot climb out, and that is a genuinely urgent call because the animal will die there. Do not stand over it and do not let the dog near it. A board angled into the well as a ramp, then leave the area completely and give it until morning, works more often than people expect. If it does not, that is a same-day job.
Groundhogs, opossums and rabbits
They use the same voids and the same fix. Groundhogs dig larger and deeper and will undermine a shed slab or a deck footing if left, which makes them a structural problem rather than just a smell. The barrier detail is identical, dug a little deeper.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get a skunk out without it spraying?
Mostly, yes. Skunks spray when they are cornered, startled or handled badly, and a one-way door avoids all three because the animal leaves on its own schedule through an opening it already uses. That is the main practical argument for exclusion over trapping under a deck three metres from your kitchen window.
How deep does the barrier have to go?
Deep enough that digging at the edge does not work, with the mesh turned outward into an L at the bottom rather than simply run straight down. Exact depth depends on grade, footings and what is buried in the way, which is why it gets looked at before it gets quoted.
There is a skunk in my window well right now.
Keep people and pets away, and angle a rough board or a length of plank into the well as a ramp with the rest of the yard clear and quiet. A lot of them are gone by morning. If it is still there, or it is injured, or there are young, call — that is a same-day job.
